Ok, just a quick thought I had. There are basically three real races in the world mongoloid(asian), negroid and caucasian. There are also three major elements of music - melody, rythym and harmony. I was just thinking that if you look at different ethnic music then it seems that melody is most associated and the integral part of a lot of asian music (think drone notes and quarter tone scales), rythym with a lot of negroid music (think tribal drumming) and harmony with caucasian (think choral chanting) As we all know, nowadays everyone is pretty much a mix of all three races do you think this could have been were the seperate parts of music came together? I wonder if it could be like a genetic thing or something? Or maybe its a load of rubbish? I don't know but it seems interesting. Anyone have any views on this?

Cool observation man! I hadn't thought of that before!! I'm sure there is alot of truth behind what you say. Basically at college we were studying some Shakespeare. Us (the students) got into a discussion with the teacher about how different languages actually are very similar. For example I know how to speak a few foreign languages due to my background/upbringing and I realised that in English the word orange refers to a colour and a fruit. It's the same in a lot of different languages!! This is not a coincidence!! Apparantly during the evolution of man people were alot closer together and had not yet migrated to different parts of the Earth. Everyone used to speak the same language - "Endo European"!! Hence the similarities! It must be a similar story with the evolution of music. When I listen to foreign music or "world" music it sounds very different at first, but alot of it can be explained with western music theory. However, it fails miserably alot of the time. Good observation.....
