My guitar teacher said there is such a thing as a CD player that will slow down a regular CD.  I need it!  Has anyone heard of such a thing?  I am not looking for software, which I know exists.  I want to play the MR1 CD at 3/4 speed until I work up to full speed, thats what I want it for.

Yes!!!
Tascam CD-GT-1......$149 and it's awesome. It can slow down a song without changing pitch, or keep the speed and change pitch. You can plug your guitar into it with built in effects and/or vocals too! I don't use it that way, the effects are OK but not that great. I use it to isolate a part, (guitar, bass, drums, etc....) and learn to play it as the CD sounds...I use it to figure out difficult parts. I even used it to record vocals however it did just OK for that. If you want to slow something down and play along, or change the key something is played in AND/OR slow it down it's well worth the money!
They also make one specifically for Bass and one for vocals all $149. Buy a power adapter cause it sucks batteries like crazy, 1/2 hr and your brand new batteries are dead...even the expensive ones! Oh and if offered buy the extended warranty...it's cheap....I dropped mine at work and the LCD display went goofy, it still worked but was difficult to read...I had to send it in and waited almost a month but they replaced it free of charge and i didn't pay nothing, not even shipping!
Hope that helps!

Thank you Rayzer, that is exactly what I need. I see them available at several websites.  I will wait a few hours to see if anyone else posts about this, then I am off to order one.

I have one of these.  They're not horrible, but they aren't great, either.  Just be aware that at half-speed the sound really starts to break up.  You can still make out single note stuff, but the notes are broken up.

I thought they were pretty cool until I picked up a Guitar Port and that lets you slow down to half-speed, too.  Sounds much better than the Tascam.  Since getting it, I haven't touched the Tascam.  The only thing about the GP is that it only lets you slow down to 1/2 speed.  But with all the great amp tones and effects, it was definitely worth it, as you can tweak your tone and effects while listening to the song, which allows you to try to match it.  And it's only $100.

The effects on the Tascam are okay in a pinch, but the GP is much better.

Instead of the Tascam, I wish I had just bought a $20 program, like Slow Blast if all I wanted to do was slow down music.  On the demos I played with, you could slow down much more than half and it sounded great.

I assume that you want it to travel with.  If that's a concern, then yeah, you should get the CD-GT1.  But if not, I would say get the GP, or software.

The Guitar Port -- is it a CD player, and who makes it?  I cannot locate it on the net.   I am looking to play at 3/4 speed, but don't want break up.  Since I will be playing Troy's instructional CDs, most of the time I will be doing the songs (not single notes).  So, I guess tell me more about the Guitar Port and I will research the two options.  I really do want a stand alone player, not something for the computer.
Nevermind -- I found it -- it's by Line 6.

Sorry about that-I should have clarified about the GP.

The Tascam will play any song, but the problem is if it's a song with lots of chords and that's what you're trying to figure out.  Because of the breakup at half-speed, it might be difficult to pick out chords at that speed.  For lead lines (that's what I meant by single notes), half-speed is fine on the Tascam.

The Tascam will let you slow down between 8%, 16%, 32% and 50%.  It sounds pretty decent up to 32%.  At 50, not very good.

He's right...the more you slow it down the worse the sound degradation.....but you have to remeber this is a learning/practice tool....not a high quality CD player. It is portable...I take mine to work with me...I'm a firefighter and i can use it as my "amp" with headphones and not disturb anybody! I also use it to pick out tough parts, slow it down and really hear what's being played...both lead parts and drum parts mainly. It's a good tool...but that's all it is...it's not a super sound system!

Yeah, it's definitely portable.  I used to take it on the train with me and practice.

But remember the issue of battery life if you're going to do something like that.  Rayzer's right:  It sucks up batteries like crazy.  That's part of the reason I stopped taking it on the train.

I would have hoped that for $150, it would have had better sound though. But like you say Rayzer, it's not a super sound system.  I just felt kind of ripped off when I heard what it sounded like at half-speed, seeing as this is its major selling point, although they do sell it as a tool for picking out lead parts, so in this way, it's not too shabby.  Better than nothing.

Why spending money when you can have your job done by using a software slow downer? I got "Amazing slow downer" from http://www.download.com
It does the work perfectly, and it does help me a lot.

All of the computer related and software options are great if you have a computer in the same room you like to practice.  This is not true for me so I need a standalone CD player.  Thanks for your suggestions -- I ordered a Tascam w/adapter.
