I listen to power metal all the time, but lots op people think I'm stupid because I listen to power metal.... They say it's gay, that the vocals suck and also that the guitar and drum parts suck.... Am I the only one over here who likes power metal and doesn't think it sux ?

you're not the only one, but really, does it matter? If you like it, then continue to enjoy it. I'm the only person I know that enjoys the music I like (apart from some cool folks I've met online). It means I have to go to a lot of concerts by myself, but what are you gonna do?

well, there's a lot of bands I've heard being called "power metal", and I must say that musically there can be a huge difference between them. The epic stories of some of Gamma Ray's lyrics makes me think you might put that band in power metal; and I love it completely; then again, there's bands that go way further with that "epic stories" (rhapsody for example), and usually I like that less. I like music because of the music, good lyrics and a story are nice, but for me it's the music and the melody that counts and a lot of power metal bands seem to be a bit lacking at that (mostly because they seem more repetitive to me and play less guitar solo's ;-)) But I can't really see why people should call it gay to listen to it; sure the vocalists often sing with "higher" voices and such, but I mean so does Bruce Dickinson at times, Halford does it ALL the time and I wouldn't call iron maiden or judas priest "gay music". But that's secondary, vitaminG is right: if you like it, f***
what other people think... I do pity you VitaminG :-) Not that there are THAT many people around here that like my music style, but at least there are some that I can talk and go to concerts with :-)

I have to interject. Rob Halfred is most definitely GAY! Though I mean that in a strictly literal since. Judas Priest Live was the first metal CD I bought and Living After Midnight was the first song I learned to play on guitar. So is that what "power metal"? The only time I heard the term is in reference to Pantera's lame first record, where Anselmo was trying to sound like Halfred or Dickinson. And if that's the case POWER METAL ROCKs!

I purposely said "gay music", halford is as gay as a gay dog, and if you know one and a half song of JP and seen 2 secs of halford on stage, you just KNOW that. However, the music they make is absolutely NOT gay in any way I can think of. If you consider high voices to be gay, I suggest you listen a bit more closer when Halford sings live, because his voice is even better when he goes low & powerful. (A good example would be the live version of "Touch of evil". At points he goes rather low and sings so godd*mn
powerful I can't think of 3 vocalists who could to the same.)

I still don't know what power metal is. I thought it was just a period of time like the 80's metal = power metal. If so, then a lot of power metal is gay. However, I think it went sour because a lot of singers were trying to rip-off Halford's style/voice registry, because it was the in-thing at the time. Halford has a powerful high registry whereas his imitators are more superficial.

Power metal is bands like h*ll
oween, Gamma Ray, Lost Horizon etc, though as with all sub genres of metal the boundaries are blurred (Iron Maiden are very popular among power-metallers, and I suppose a lot of Priest's stuff could be called power metal)

geez, one could almost be forgiven for thinking you're spamming the forum with this "newly discovered" band, given that 3 of your 4 posts so far have been about them. I'm not familiar with Arthurkill, so I couldn't say if they would be considered Powermetal. Check out the bands on this list http://www.bnrmetal.com/lists/power.htm and you can make up your own mind if Arthurkill's sound is anything like them.

WOW! that list you gave me is awesome, your so sweet. No i am not spamming by the way. im just new here and new to metal and  i don't know of many other bands other than Arthurkill. They are kind of the first band with a harder sound that I have gotten into and I am hooked! I need more bands like them and that list is great. Thanks Vitamin G! I checked out a few of the bands on the list already and they don't sound like Arthurkill but they are cool too! Do you or anyone else have any good albums that you might recommend a newcomer of metal? if you want to hear some Arthurkill, I already posted the link in my previous post. spacegirl, checkout Children of Bodom and Shadows Fall. Both bands have really nice guitar work IMHO on both the rhythm and leads. There's also the classics like Iron Maiden, Mettalica (anything from Kill 'em All to And Justice for All) Slayer, Testament. Ozzy and Black Sabbath are definitely metal essentials to have also IMHO.

thank you woodshedder... that is so nice i like the more guitar oriented metal sounds and I have heard some metallica before..I heard Iron Maiden is really cool, more melodic guitars? I love Ozzy's voice although I haven't heard much Black Sabbath. I checked out Shadows Fall and their sound is cool, but I did'nt like some of his "growling " vocals.. I think I like more of the singing style of metal... some one told me to check out In Flames??? Does anyone know about this band?

in flames has very good guitar lines; but i don't like the vocals. here are my favourite melodic metal bands (so with a hard souns) * judas priest best albums: painkiller, turbo, metal works (compilation CD) best songs: blood red skies, painkiller, electric eye, reckless,... * yngwie malmsteen * tristania * megadeth (a lot like metallica) * blind guardian * gamma ray * nightwish * rammstein I deliberately listed metal bands of different kinds (power, heavy, trash, new, industrial, 'classical',...) so that you can get to know the subgenres :-) I deliberately left out black and death; they suck most times :P (check cradle of filth though)

cradle of filth is more like black metal. Some of their music is very melodic and such; pretty good lyrics sometimes as well. However other songs are pretty boring and repetitive. But check out their covers! Those rule! Hallowed be thy name (iron maiden cover) and sleepless (anathema cover) are both great songs on all aspects imo. The guitar solo's are great too. But well, it's still black metal; so you might not like it at all :-)

everyone who says that power metal is gay, is gay himself. He s just talking a lot of trash, that s it. I think most of the new metal stuff is gay. (because of their gaily hair which is raised up high (like 12Stones or Hoobastank, i mean, just look at those guys, then decide what s gay or not)) nothing against the members who like these bands. if ther are any:sorry oh, and spacegirl, try these if you find them anywhere in the net (don t know myself where) TESTAMENT NUCLEAR ASSAULT QUEENSRYCHE IRON MAIDEN JUDAS PRIEST ANTHRAX GRAVE DIGGER (in my opinion best german heavy metal (with a little bit of power metal)) DESTINY S END (don t know why this band isnt so famous but it s melodic power metal that really kicks ass) ICED EARTH 3 INCHES OF BLOOD(pure heavy/power metal) (Edited by old fashion Metal at 3:12 pm on June 25, 2005)

metal militia, have you ever played Tony hawks underground 2? There s a song of 3 inches of blood called deadly sinners. That song is just amazing. Halford-like voice and melodic guitars like grindcore bands (as i lay dying, unearth).Just freaky! But a minus on that is, that it hasn t got a guitar solo .
