i have been trying for several weeks now to try and come up with a few prog metal type songs (in the style of symphony x and children of bodom)  but to no avail, i have come up with a really cool sounding lead riff but i would like to come up with some chord progressions so i could work around with those more and have a foundation to work around with, what kinds of chords should i be using for this style of music? thanks in advance!

Well one thing, i think you should stay away from the same boring old powerchords all the time.
I would probably try have 2 guitars harmonizing leads so theres not much use of chords except I dunno any theory for chords and chord progressions :P

actually my band has 3 guitarists, me on lead,  a second lead player playing 'keyboardesque' riffs and then my rhythm player doing all that stuff, we dont like using powerchords much hence why im asking about chord progressions.
