Just got me this album, and i must say that i am very impressed. It also seems that the sound is heavier yet less progressive then Six degrees ... Anyone else has the same feeling ?

It's a good album, but how much you like it seems to depend on whether you like Dream Theater for the metal or the prog.  They have said that they set out to make more of a "classic metal" album than their usual style.

I like a lot of the album; my only problem is that the tone of the songs are so unrelentingly dark and heavy that I really have to be in the right kind of mood to listen to it.  It's a good album to listen to when you're angry.

i didnt like it at all. you can definitely tell that JP wrote tons of riffs and then they slapped it all together in the studio and threw on some vocals as an afterthought.

'in the name of god' just goes on forever with its 3-line annoying chorus being repeated about 20 times every 90 seconds.

and i definitely don't prefer labrie's vocals.

(this is my opinion, and i still respect what DT can do. but i prefer Pain of Salvation, Opeth, Tristania, Nightwish, Porcupine Tree, etc... to DT.)

why is europe music > american music? screw Dubya, i'm moving to europe.

i feel with dream theater, that while their chops have apparently increased, their musicality is not as impressive as much. i think that the band as a whole is trying to shred to much. ever since jordan rudess came on board, the music is just a chops/shredfest now. for example, in Falling into Infinity, the music was so awesome! i mean, there were great songs on that album. tonewise, the production was nice and the overall vibe i got from listening to that album was one of great musicianship. but i have to admit, petrucci's playing is not as tastefull to me as it used to be. i have feeling that he is trying to shred compete with jordan. jordan can intimidate so many musicians because he has such a reservoir of music inside of him. anyways, i think they sounded better when they had kevin moore and derek sherinian on keys. okay, i know i am going to get bashed about this...BRING IT ON!!! j/k

I would agree also, I much rather some of the older Dream Theater music, I do however think JP is a really good guitar player.

I don't think I'd agree about all the stuff they've done with Rudess.  I thought Scenes from a Memory and 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence were both good albums.  Train of Thought does go a tad overboard on the weedly weedly wank, although there are some decent  parts as well.  Stream of Conciousness is the track I like the most on it.

As for LaBrie's vocals, he seems to be a singer you either love or hate.  Personally I much prefer his style to the screamers or gravel voiced growlers that seem to dominate modern metal.  But each to their own.

I'm going to see Dream Theater live in Montreal on March 27.  Some of the reports I'm hearing from the current European tour have the show clocking in a close to 3 hours with lots of old and new material so it should be a good show.

If they play a Queen song straight after the interval you'll find that large portions of the crowd have no idea what song it is, and will be come worried that DT are going to cover the whole album

But don't worry... they don't of course, they played very different sets at their 2 gigs in the UK, so maybe they won't play it (if your lucky they might play not much of the new stuff, as at their first UK gig they played it all, but then at the second they didn't play 3 of the songs, I think they were trying to gauge how well everything went down with the crowd)

Well, I won't be too likely to not recognize a Queen song.  I'm 41 and I grew up with that stuff.  It's these new bands like Metallica I'd be likely to miss. :D

I actually think it's pretty cool the way Dream Theater gives props to the bands that influenced them with the covers they do.  I also like the way they mix up the shows; I can't do it this time but it would be cool to catch them on successive dates in Montreal and Toronto and get a different show each night.

The main songs I'd like to hear off of ToT are Endless Sacrifice and Stream of Conciousness.  For the rest I'd rather hear some older stuff.  I hear they've been performing A Change of Seasons in its entirety at some of the shows and I'd love to see that.  ACOS is possibly my favorite song by anyone and may all by itself cause me to purchase 7-string someday.

The new dream theater album is great, but is not the best they have made. The best!: "Once In A Livetime",, A change of seasons (great song) !!!

I thought that some of the singing on Once in a Livetime wasn't that great... i prefer the live scenes dvd, but Images and Words is probably my favourite DT album
