I played guitar for 5 year, and i used to practice first very slow and then i increased very graduatilly the spedd training. So, i go from down to up speed, But this new concept "Top Down. Botom Up", of troy new digital magazine, says that should do the oposite, star at a very high speed and then go down with it. So, i understan that i have to go down, late up, and late down. I am wrong or right with concept.? I.m misundesrtood?

How it works is you start out playing at a high speed, move down in speed and then build back up to your max speed. One reason of doing this is to push your limits. If you push past your max speed then the max speed will not seem as hard anymore. I used to do this before but by building up and then push past my max speed. I would then slow down and speed back up and so on while pushing my max speed. Here is a good reason for starting fast and then moving downwards. When you are picking fast you need to use smaller pick motions. Alot of times when you play slower you play with larger motions. When you play fast analyze how you are picking at this speed. Then as you slow down in speed try to keep this same picking technique. If you play with smaller motions while you are playing at a slower tempo you are constantly reinforcing this technique. In return you will have more control when you get to faster tempo's. Troy's new dvd has more on this and seeing him actually doing it helps alot also.

Here is how I would approach it. If I was not warmed up at all I would maybe start out slow and build up in increments as you may have been doing before. Just one swipe up to full speed just to warm yourself up. Then start in with playing at a high speed while you examine your pick hand. Now slow it down while trying to keep the way you pick at high speeds exactly the same. Next find the spot where you feel comfortable playing the exercise, lick or whatever with no tension at all. Mark this down. This is you bottom. Remember to keep the picking tight like you did at high speeds. Now build back up in increments until you hit your top speed. This is where you can still play it cleanly but you start feeling a little tension and feeling like you are just hanging in there. Write this down Next set a goal speed. Maybe 5 bpm over this. Now give this a shot. It may be sloppy but that is ok because you won't stay here long. Now it's time to go back down to your top speed. Hopefully your top speed will be a little easier to play now. If not then decrease the tempo even more. Go down to a speed that you can play fine with no tension. Build back up again and repeat the same process. Your goal is to play at your top speed with no tension at all. When you can do this it's time to set a new top speed. As mentioned in the beginning you need to make sure you keep pick motions exactly the same throughout. If you start to loose it then go to a faster tempo and build back down again while keeping the picking motions the same. The whole goal here is to keep your top speed moving along by pushing past it, slowing down below it and building back up again. The two keys to keep in mind while doing this is play with as little amount of tension as possible and keep small picking motions throughout!
