hi.i'm in the heavy metal lead guitar2 second part now and ,my teacher teaches my every week.but i think i have more time to practice in summer and my teacher's opinion is two classes in a week and starting speed mechanic with lead 2 together.now i wanna now is it okay to do that?i dont know about speed mechanic exercises but now i play lead guitar solos on about 90.so can i play speed mechanic with this tempo?another opinion is to practice leads guitar solos to bring them to record tempo.but i dont know which is true:increase my tempo when practicing speed mechanic and after that practice the solos when my tempo is upgraded or practice lead hguitar solos and after recorded them i'm ready for speed mechanic and then study that?

I would say yes go ahead and work on Speed Mechanics while working on lead level two. Just take and exercise and keep working on that while you progress through lead level two. When you get that exercise done move to another. Look at the speed mechanics as a supplemental type thing to the lead level two. Then when you get done with lead level two dive right in full force with speed mechanics or even move to Troy's Masterclass series. As far as two lessons per week, if you can afford it then fine. More guidance can always help. If you are tight for money then I would stick with maybe one lesson. I'm assuming you are taking one hour lessons. One lesson a week is really all you need. It gives the teacher a chance to see how you are progressing and gives you a chance to ask whatever questions you may have. If you feel like you don't have enough time to cover everything you need to in the lessons then maybe give it a try but if you feel pretty good about your lessons I think you would be fine with one. Again if you have plenty of money and this is not a factor then it couldn't hurt. Just weigh out the positives and negatives and decide.

No, I think this is a horrible way to practice. You need to take as much time as you need to get it right! The second choice of being focused will be much more useful for your playing. Also practicing only those two things for 3 1/2 hours will only burn you out and suck all the inspiration right out of you. You need to also work on stuff that will both make you a more well rounded player and things that you enjoy! By well rounded I mean things like ear-training, rhythm guitar work, improvising, songwriting etc... Don't forget the rhythm guitar side of things! This is 90% of all songs! Also you need to make sure you work on some things you really enjoy. Do you enjoy creating some song of your own? Do you enjoy working on cover songs? Whatever it is you need to add this into your practice schedule. With the way you are suggested to do it sure you may be able to rip up some cool sounding scales but what about the rest of your playing? In some cases concentrating on just these two things can hurt your playing. You may start loosing focus after awhile and just go through the motions. Then all you are doing is training yourself to play sloppy. Not good!!! It's not good enough to learn techniques alone. You need to learn how to apply them and physically use them in real playing situations. This needs to be part of your practice! So I would figure out what you enjoy most and what your goals are. Then structure a practice schedule around that. Section off time slots for these these things. Some may be 10 minutes, some a half hour and maybe one or two a full hour. Make something you enjoy like possibly working on songs a half hour to an hour. Again if you do something you enjoy it will keep your inspiration going and you then are doing this for something other then just finishing up the books! You always have to remember why you are doing this. Do you want to get good at playing exercises or do you want to get good at playing real music!

Just and additional note don't go to the other extreme. Practicing everything for 10 minute each. You need to pick the subjects you want to cover and give them the each time that you think you really need for them. For some 10 minutes is just scratching the surface and for others a half hour is just overkill. Just curious what is this program he has you on? If you don't mind tell me how it works.

thanks you all, you're right, but i enjoy when i play exercises hardly!because i think'' i'm ganna be a good player this way.'' i've spent hours of hard practicing lead exercises until now,but i like this way of practicing,i don't know why, i don't like to cover any songs now,i want to complete my courses and books and then move to the real work.even when me and my friend(he is a drummer) play to gether he practices his own exercises and i use him as a metronome ! and play my practices, yes i think this is not the best way. i play the rhythm guitars some times and when i'm in the bus(my university is far away from home)i read fretboard mastery .so i'm doing really hard because i wanna be a good lead guitarist for our future band as soon as possible but i'm sure you guys know even more than my teacher and i really need your teaches too,ill think about your opinions, thanks alot

I think this is an interesting subject. Beginner and intermediate players are mostly interested in lead. Some guys even think that "rhythm guitar" is just struming some chords, so as it just takes some basic chord knowledge and a basic sense of rhythm they do this in a couple of months and then forget about it. Some people just want to learn how to play ultra fast solos so they practice 20 finger tapping, monster arpeggios, and every pyrotechnic ever invented. This is just fine I guess, the concept of the well rounded musician is an academic approach to guitar. Thatīs because really advanced musicians know what you have to master to be a competent player, beginners and intermediate players donīt, and maybe they donīt even care. Why is it fine then?, because you go through music in stages. Thereīs the I want to play my favorite songs stage, then the I want to be in a band stage, and 90% of the people who plays an instrument just leave music after this point and make a living as a doctor, lawyer, salesman, or whatever. Do you need to be well rounded at that point?, not really. BUT If you decide to go further in music you soon discover how much you need this academic approach of music, because you mature as a musician, thatīs why conservatories still exist. So I think everyone has the right moment to mature and find the tuition that they need.

well it depends on who you are if you decide what you think is important (rhythm or lead) when you start. my friend just got intrested in guitar and immediantly wanted to learn rhythm. i dont know if its just his parents or teachers influence but i didnt say anything. and if your a begginer you should probably buy both the leads and rhythms books not only fro skill level but lead guitar isnt just soloing 24/7 on every song... rhythm is everything but the solos and small riffs that are thrown in
----- life is short so do everything to make it rock :)
